Chris Bacon Named
Woodson Art Museum’s
2004 Master Wildlife Artist

WAUSAU, WISCONSIN – The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin, has named Canadian painter Chris Bacon as its 2004 Master Wildlife Artist. Bacon will receive the award during the preview opening of “Birds in Art” on September 10, 2004.

As the Woodson’s 26th Master Artist, Bacon will be represented in “Birds in Art” by more than a dozen paintings as well as preliminary studies and childhood artworks. The artist will present a free public program at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. In announcing the 2004 Master, Woodson director Kathy Kelsey Foley noted that Bacon’s remarkable watercolor paintings bring to mind adjectives that range from ethereal to meticulous and vivid to subtle. “He simultaneously creates environments that are recognizable yet not of this world. Are they places we know or ones we’d like to know? His birds display an elegance that is ra rely equaled and the overall effect of his paintings can seem magical. Chris’s gentle manner and powerful personal style translate into artworks truly worthy of the Master Wildlife Artist honor.”

Bacon, a self-taught artist who resides in Burlington, Ontario, has participated in thirteen previous “Birds in Art” exhibitions. He is represented in the Woodson Art Museum’s permanent collection by three drawings and four watercolor paintings. Whether depicting a basking peafowl or sandhill crane portrait, Bacon’s compositions are meticulously rendered, luminous in subtle tone, and imbued with great love, respect, and knowledge of his subject matter.

”Birds in Art,” on view from September 11 – November 14, will feature more than 120 original paintings, sculptures, and graphics created by artists from around the globe.

The exhibition’s full-color catalogue, featuring an essay about Bacon, is available for $18.50 plus $4.50 S/H.
